Evanescence explodiu no cenário musical com seu grande álbum de estréia em 2003, "Fallen". Os poderosos vocais de Amy Lee o direcionaram ao estrelato internacional com mais de 17 milhões de cópias vendidas.

Mesmo depois de significativas alterações em sua formação, a banda continuou a prosperar, com o sucessor, "The Open Door" de 2006, ficando no topo das paradas de vários países ao redor do mundo — incluindo os Estados Unidos — onde, novamente, conseguiu vender aos milhões.

Mas quando o ciclo de turnê do "The Open Door" terminou, em 2007, o Evanescence saiu dos holofotes, não lançando nenhuma música nova — até que o grupo lançar um disco auto-intitulado no outono passado.

Lee disse que a razão para o hiato da banda foi simples: "Eu queria ser normal. Amo o que faço, mas senti uma séria necessidade de simplesmente conhecer a Amy novamente — antes de sair, estar no palco e trabalhar a todo o tempo", disse ela durante uma recente teleconferência. "Muitas coisas acontecem nos bastidores. Há muito trabalho envolvido que os fãs não vêem. E eu me casei, precisei de um tempo de pausa antes de começar a escrever para este álbum".

"Eu levei algum (tempo) para me achar... e isso me fez ficar inspirada a fazer outro álbum do Evanescence... O que nós terminamos envolveu muito sangue, suor e lágrimas — entretanto, foi algo que nós investimos muito e estamos completamente orgulhosos".

Com o sucesso [do álbum] anterior do grupo, Lee não sentiu a pressão de fazer mais um sucesso de mercado. Em vez disso, ela tomou seu tempo para criar algo que ela sentisse que estaria ombro a ombro com os outros álbuns de sucesso da banda.

"Um disco do Evanescence é uma grande produção e eu sempre gastei muito tempo e dinheiro que no que pensei ser necessário para torná-los grandiosos e perfeitos, para serem, no meu coração, a melhor coisa que já tínhamos feito", ela disse. "É uma espécie de definição de alto padrão. Às vezes, pode ser enlouquecedor para mim e para as pessoas ao meu redor.

"Mas sempre quero estar crescendo e mostrando sinais de mudança. Eu acho que isso leva um certo tempo... Não há regras. Todo mundo trabalha a seu próprio ritmo, da sua própria maneira... por isso, continuarei a levar todo o tempo que for preciso para fazer algo que eu ache que seja novo, especial e que valha a pena ouvir".

"Estamos na Carnival (of Madness) e, depois, acho que teremos três semanas de folga, ou algo assim, o que é legal. Logo em seguida, temos uma grande turnê sul-americana", disse Lee sobre os planos de seu grupo. "E isso será mais uma daquelas coisas sobre irmos a um monte de lugares onde nunca estivemos e sentimos falta [por não ter ido]. Estamos tentando ir à Colômbia e alguns outros lugares legais. Também tocaremos por quatro datas no Reino Unido, e acredito que seja somente isso para nós este ano.

"Temos feito disso uma meta: ir a lugares que nunca fomos antes. Estamos em turnê há uma década... e nós estivemos por diversos lugares, mas há sempre aqueles poucos que não davam certo, como Marrocos... e ainda não fomos à Polônia... e a todos esses países aleatórios onde nunca tínhamos ido.

"Tem sido muito gratificante ir a novos lugares e ter essa sensação de 'primeira vez'. Quando você está tocando pela primeira vez na frente de um grupo de fãs, isso é incrivelmente revigorante. Mas estamos fazendo isso há um tempo. É muito legal voltar e, não só ver novos fãs, mas também os que ainda estão lá, à sua espera".

Evanescence exploded on the music scene with its 2003 major-label debut, "Fallen," riding Amy Lee's powerful vocals to international stardom with more than 17 million copies sold.

Even after some significant lineup changes, the band continued to prosper, as its 2006 follow-up, "The Open Door," topped the album charts in countries around the world -- including the United States -- and again sold in the millions.

But when the touring cycle for "The Open Door" ended in 2007, Evanescence dropped out of the spotlight, not putting out any new music until the group released a self-titled record last fall.

Lee said the reason for the band's hiatus was simple: "I wanted to be normal.

"I love what I do, but I felt like in a way I seriously needed to get to just know Amy again before going out and putting myself out there, and being on stage, and working all the time," she said during a recent teleconference. "There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes. There is a lot of work involved that fans don't see. And I did get married and take some real time off before we started the writing for this record.

"I did spend some (time) finding myself ... and it made me get inspired to make another Evanescence album. ... What we ended up with was something that took a lot of blood, sweat and tears, but something that we were so invested in and completely proud of."

With the group's previous success, Lee felt no pressure to rush another Evanescence record into the marketplace. Instead, she took her time to create something that she felt stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the band's hit albums.

"An Evanescence record's a big production and I've always taken all the time and money that I thought that it needed to be great; to be perfect; to be, in my heart, the best thing we've ever done," she said. "It's sort of a high standard to set and sometimes it can be maddening for me and the people around me.

"But I always want to be growing and showing signs of change and I think it takes time. ... There are no rules. Everybody works at their own pace in their own way, ... so I'm going to continue to take all the time it takes to make something that I think is new, and special, and worth hearing."

Evanescence has been back on the road promoting the new record and is a headliner on the Carnival of Madness tour with Chevelle, Halestorm, Cavo and New Medicine. The tour will stop at the Mohegan Sun Arena on Thursday, Aug. 30.

"We have Carnival (of Madness) and then I think we have three weeks off or something, which is cool, and then we have a big South American tour," Lee said of her group's plans. "And that will be another one of those things where we are going to a lot of those place we haven't been to and we keep missing. We are trying to go to Colombia and some other cool places. And then we play like four dates in the (United Kingdom) and I think that will be it for this year for us.

"We've been making it a point to get to places that we've never been to before. We've been touring for a decade now ... and we've been all over the place, but there are always those few places that didn't work out, like Morocco and ... we still haven't been to Poland ... and all of these random places that we just hadn't been to.

"It's been really fulfilling to go to places and have that first-time feeling. When you are playing for the first time in front of a group of fans, it is incredibly invigorating.

"But we've been doing this for a while (and) it's really cool to come back and not only see new fans, but also the ones that are still there and that have been waiting."
