Excelente review publicada no site Metality UAE sobre o show do Evanescence no Dubai World Trade Center em Dubai, nos Emirados Árabes Unidos. Grandes elogios à banda e, principalmente, Amy Lee e Will Hunt. O autor também destaca o profissionalismo, organizações do evento e a variedade de pessoas que lá estavam. Finaliza dizendo: "Foi uma real seção transversal da cultura e sociedade de Dubai".

Na última noite, às 09:35, assistimos a um novo capítulo na história da música de Dubai e dos Emirados Árabes Unidos. Com uma voz impressionante - Amy Lee - a bola de fogo e de energia do Evanescence saltou para o palco e manteve todos em êxtase por uma hora e 30 minutos.

A partir do segundo compasso de abertura com "What You Want", tocou até a última nota da música do encore sem ter parado de se mover, saltar e, em momento algum, errou uma nota.

Embora o show tenha sido, sem dúvida, o show de Amy Lee, o baterista Will Hunt teve um desempenho incrível, o mestre da bateria acrescentou atratividade extra para a banda e foi uma alegria assisti-lo. Hunt foi também o mais amigável membro da banda e parou para nos dar um feedback sobre [a banda] EYE, a qual ele foi muito apreciado!

A segunda música da banda tocou, por que não? A multidão cantando junto e houve uma notável mudança na energia, a partir do tipo de "oh, olha a banda está aqui" f*** EMOÇÃO. 'Sim a banda está no palco e nós conhecemos essa música' - tipo de energia com todos se aproximando [do palco] e gritando o mais alto possível de seus pulmões.

Para a quinta canção do seu conjunto, Let it Go* Amy Lee trouxe seu piano. Esta canção foi o primeiro showcase real de sua voz e outra favorita da multidão, claro.

O destaque total da noite para mim foi a nova música do Evanescence, The Change. Se você achava que a voz de Amy Lee era boa antes - você precisa ouvir essa canção. Tem alcance vocal muito maior e a variação de qualquer uma das músicas mais antigas - que depois de algum tempo podem soar a mesma.

Eu amo a energia e paixão que há nessa música e ouvir essa ginástica vocal é como deslizar em um arco-íris em uma piscina na floresta. Eu acho que você necessita ouvi-la para compreender essa última frase!

Neste momento, um dos nossos amigos nos enviou uma mensagem e dizendo: 'Eu desejaria poder cantar assim!' - Sim nós também. Tentativas recentes de cantá-la no chuveiro têm causado o desaparecimento de gatos por causa de medo.

A última música antes do bis foi outra que agradou a multidão, Wake Me Up Inside*. Começou por meia dúzia de fogos de artifício no palco, prontos para decolar. Estávamos meio que esperando isqueiros, mas o desempenho de alta octanagem manteve todos pulando, gritando e batendo cabeça.

A música terminou, o palco ficou escuro e eu fiquei 'Mas eles não tocarão My Immortal?' (Inserir cara triste aqui. Amy Lee tinha dito na coletiva de imprensa que eles iriam tocá-la)

Três minutos depois, ela estava delimitada de volta aos palcos com a mesma energia que subiu. Sentou-se ao piano e tocou aquela que deve ser a faixa mais conhecida da banda - Eu estava apaziguado. Os isqueiros vieram, a multidão encheu seus pulmões e tudo o que podia ser ouvidos eram as cepas de My Immortal sendo cantadas por milhares de pessoas. Perfeito.

A Produção

Este foi um show difícil de se criticar - o local estava incrível em termos de tamanho, conjunto, acústica e foi bem definido para o acesso do público.

A iluminação estava excelente - a última vez que escrevi, algum metaleiro disse: "a iluminação é sempre boa" - bem, não, não é. Havia uma enorme diferença entre a iluminação deste show e a do show do A7X. Este foi muito mais profissional e em sintonia com a música.

Em geral, foi um show excelente em termos de escolha de atos, profissionalismo, configurações e execuções. Bom trabaçho feito pela Traffik Events. Foi um show muito melhor do que o do Anathema no ano passado.

Estimamos que cerca de 2.500 pessoas estavam no show - novamente uma audiência não muito boa, mas foi impressionante ver a variedade de pessoas que estavam lá. Desde uma embonecada diva de saltos até o tradicional vestido com túnicas. Vimos muitos jovens (vimos um menino de cerca de 6 anos) e muitos mais velhos (nós estimamos que havia uma com mais de 70 anos). Foi uma real seção transversal da cultura e sociedade de Dubai.

At 9.35pm last night Dubai witnessed a new chapter in the UAE’s music history. Evanescence and the fireball of energy with the astounding voice – Amy Lee – leapt onto the stage and kept everyone in rapture for one hour and 30 minutes.

From the second the opening bars of What You Want played to the last note of the very last encore song she never stopped moving, jumping, and never put a note wrong.

Although the show was undoubtedly the Amy-Lee show, the drummer Will Hunt played an incredible set, the drumstick-twirling maestro added that extra pizzazz to the band and he was a joy to watch. Hunt was also the friendliest member of the band and stopped to give us feedback on EYE, which was much appreciated!

The second song the band played, Why Not? got the crowd singing along and there was a noticeable change in energy, from the kind of ‘oh look the band is here’ excitement to ‘**** YEAH the band is on stage and we know this song’ – kind of energy with everyone surging forward and screaming at the top of their lungs.

For the fifth song in their set, Gonna Let it Go Amy Lee brought out her piano. This song was the first real showcase of her voice and another clear crowd favourite.

The total highlight of the night for me was Evanescence’s new song The Change. If you thought Amy Lee’s voice was good before – you have to hear this song. It has far more vocal range and variation than any of the older songs – which after a while can sound the same.

I love the energy and passion in this song and listening to the vocal gymnastics is like sliding down a rainbow into a forest pool. You have to listen to it to understand that last sentence I think!

At this stage one of our friends texted us and said ‘I wish I could sing like that!’ – yeah us too. Recent attempts at singing in the shower have caused the cats to cower in fright.

The last song before the encore was another crowd pleaser ‘Wake Me Up Inside’, kicked off by half a dozen stage fireworks going off. We were half expecting the lighters to come out for this one, but the high-octane performance kept everyone jumping, screaming and headbanging.

The song ended, the stage went dark and I was left going ‘But they did not play My Immortal?” (insert sad face here. Amy Lee had said in the press conference that they were going to play it.

Three minutes later she bounded back on stage with the same energy she hit the stage with in the very first second, sat at her piano and played what must be the band’s best known track – I was appeased – the lighters came out, the crowd filled their lungs and all that could be heard were the strains of My Immortal being sung by a couple of thousand people. Perfect.

The Production

This was a show that was hard to fault – the venue was amazing in terms of size, set up and acoustics and was laid out well for crowd access.

There were a couple of sound issues, the feedback problem during the EYE set and the fact that the sound at the back of the venue (lets call them the cheap seats) was not that good for half of the concert. Getting feedback from the crowd at the back, we were told that EYE’s set was very tinny with little bass, which somewhat spoiled their set for those at the back. However, the sound issue was addressed and the bass kicked in halfway through Evanescence’s set and from there on in it was all good.

The lighting was excellent – the last time I wrote that some metalhead said ‘the lighting is always good’ – well no, it aint. There was a massive difference between the lighting this show and the lighting at the A7X gig. This was far more professional and in tune with the music.

Overall this was an outstanding show in terms of choice of acts, professionalism, set up and execution. Well done to Traffik Events this was a far better show than the Anathema gig last year.

We estimate that about 2,500 people were at the gig – again not a very good showing, but what was awesome to see was the variety of people there, from the dolled up diva’s in micro-mini’s and skyscraper heels to the traditionally dressed in Abayas and shayla’s and from very young (we saw a boy of about 6) to the much older (we estimate in their 70s) it was a true cross section of Dubai culture and society.

"Música é minha paixão número um na vida" - Amy

"Uma maravilhosa base de fãs"

Com o título "Evanescence em um lugar mais feliz", o site The National publicou uma entrevista feita com Amy Lee. Hiato do Evanescence, retorno ao mundo da música, novo álbum e "maravilhosa base de fãs" e primeiro show em Dubai (EAU) são os temas abordados.

Com toda a agitação Lee imaginou que retornar para casa e abrir um restaurante seria uma aposta mais segura do que estar em uma grande banda de rock grande.

Lembro-me de querer apenas uma grande pausa. Eu me senti como sendo outra pessoa nesse momento. Quem sabe abrir um restaurante e fazer algo artístico, porém, não música.

Ironicamente, a grande parte do tempo sem as atividades musicais atiçaram o fogo novamente.

Foi através da prática diária da harpa, um presente de seu marido, que ela se reconectou com sua música e começou a escrever novas.

Era um tipo totalmente diferente de música. Isso permitiu que eu pudesse me expressar em um caminho diferente. Me ajudou a aprender que, apesar de amar todos os tipos de arte - visuais, musicais, comestíveis - Música é minha paixão número um na vida

Mas ser Evanescence e gravar um novo álbum se tornou outra provação.

A próxima pessoa a enfrentar o cepo foi o produtor Steve Lillywhite, o som orientado para o pop (U2 e Matchbox 20) não foi considerado um bom ajuste para o território mais sombrio que o grupo tinham a intenção de explorar. A banda encontrou seu ritmo com o produtor Nick Deftones Rasculinecz e o consequente terceiro álbum auto-intitulado está ainda mais atraente.

Ele veio de uma forma mais confiante e um lugar mais divertido vocalmente. Ainda há os sentimentos de angústia nas canções mas não há novas coisas acontecendo. Isso torna a escuridão mais escura quando há luz no meio

Mas será que os fãs ainda se importavam? Lee temia que os cinco anos de pausa entre os álbuns fossem muito para manter o interesse. Graças ao álbum a ser vazado na internet, as preocupações de Lee foram dissipadas durante uma turnê de divulgação, quando a multidão cantou junto as músicas novas - uma semana antes do álbum ser lançado oficialmente.

Realmente temos a sorte de ter uma base de fãs maravilhosa em todo o mundo. Eu acho que com a tecnologia, os meios de comunicação e tudo mais acontecendo com o mundo da música, agora é muito difícil não encontrar música nova se você não está olhando para ela especificamente. Evanescence are in a happier place ahead of Dubai concert

Since the Arkansas goth-rock band Evanescence emerged with their 2003 mega-selling debut album Fallen, the searing drama of their records was matched by the turmoil offstage.

By the time the group arrive at the Dubai World Trade Centre on Friday night, the singer Amy Lee will be the only one left standing from the original line-up.

Festering tensions between Lee and the guitarist Ben Moody resulted in the latter leaving the band in 2003 due to "creative differences".

Four years later, as the group were touring 2006's successful follow-up The Open Door, the bassist John Le Compt was fired and the drummer Rocky Gray quit.

Both went on to join Moody to form a rival goth band We Are The Fallen whose 2010 debut Tear Down The World sold modestly.

With all that upheaval, no wonder Lee wondered whether opening up a little restaurant back home would be a safer bet than being in a big rock band.

"I remember just wanting a big break," she recalls. "I just felt like being somebody else right now and perhaps open a restaurant and do something artistic but not music."

Ironically, it took the most non-rocking of musical pursuits to stoke the fires once again.

It was through Lee's daily practice of the harp, a gift from her husband, that she reconnected with her music and began writing songs again.

"It was a whole different kind of music," she says. "It allowed me to express myself in a different kind of way and helped me learn that although I love all different kinds of art - visual, musical, edible - music is my number one passion in life."

But being Evanescence, recording the new album became another ordeal.

The next person to face the chopping block was the producer Steve Lillywhite, his pop-orientated sound (U2 and Matchbox 20) deemed not a good fit for the darker territory the group were intent on exploring. The band found their groove with the Deftones producer Nick Rasculinecz and the resulting self-titled third album is their most compelling yet.

While previous albums were defined by Lee's explosive bouts of anguish, the new songs have Lee trading the pity for a new-found sass best exhibited in the strutting lead single What You Want and the sweeping I Am Broken.

"It is coming from a more confident and fun kind of place, vocally," Lee says. "There are still those feelings of yearning in the songs but there is more going on here. It makes the dark darker when there is light in between."

But did the fans still care? Lee feared the five years off between albums was too much of gap to sustain interest. Thanks to the album being leaked online, Lee's concerns were allayed during a promo tour when the crowd sang along to the new songs a week before the album was officially released.

"We are really lucky to have a wonderful fan base around the world", she says. "I think with technology and the media and everything else going on with the music world right now, it is very hard to find new music if you are not looking for it specifically. The cool thing about such a strong fan base is then they know to look out for the new album."

This is part of the reason why Evanescence's latest world tour is their most far-reaching yet, making stops in new territories including Morocco and their Middle East debut performance in Dubai.

As well as the adventure, Lee says the tour is a thank you to fans for staying the course.

"We love the fact that we don't know what to expect and to play to fans who never saw us before," she says.

"Dubai is definitely one place we are looking forward to and I know we will get at least a full day there so that should be fun."

UthMag: É a primeira vez que você está visitando o Oriente Médio?

Will: Nós tocamos em países próximos à Dubai, mas esta é a primeira vez que a banda visitará Dubai, definitivamente. Estamos realmente animados para tocar lá. Temos ouvido muito sobre isso e visto muitas fotos. Parece um lugar incrível.

UthMag: Você acha que vocês terão tempo para fazer alguns passeios ou continuarão com a turnê?

W: Será muito difícil, porque voamos [para Dubai] um dia antes do show e partiremos no dia seguinte. Teremos algumas horas, mas não tanto tempo quanto gostaríamos de ter para explorar Dubai.

UthMag: Como foi a experiência em turnê até agora?

W: Foi ótimo! Começamos a turnê em setembro e se mantem em uma relação estável desde então. Nós estivemos muito ocupados e as multidões têm sido surpreendentes. O novo álbum está sendo recebido muito bem também.

UthMag: Qual é a parte mais difícil de estar em turnê?

W: A parte mais difícil de estar em turnê é ficar longe de minha esposa e filha. E, claro, os 2 cães.

UthMag: Você deixou o Evanescence por algum tempo. Como foi voltar à banda?

W: Nós terminamos a turnê do "The Open Door" em 2007. Todos nós tivemos um tempo de folga, pois Amy queria apenas ter uma vida normal. Durante esse tempo, ela estava escrevendo. Então todos se reuniram e começaram a escrever e foi quando realmente começamos a trabalhar no novo álbum. Mas eu estava muito ocupado durante esse tempo. Estava trabalhando com uma banda chamada Static X. Também trabalhei com Zakk Wylde - o guitarrista de Ozzy Osbourne - em uma banda chamada Black Label Society, que é um grande sucesso nos EUA e na Europa. Tocar música, às vezes, pode ser pensado como um negócio, mas eu realmente gosto de tocar minha música e trabalhar com outras pessoas.

UthMag: Qual é a melhor parte de ser um músico?

W: A melhor parte de ser um músico é aquele sentimento de unidade e de energia quando você começa a tocar  na frente de 50.000 - 60.000 pessoas músicas que você escreveu.

UthMag: 50.000 - 60.000? Você sempre fica nervoso antes de um show?

W: Eu não fico mais nervoso. Simplesmente subo ao palco e faço minha parte. Mas há um caso: quando estávamos tocando no Prêmio Nobel da Paz na Noruega, em dezembro. Foi televisionado internacionalmente. Havia muitos diplomatas e até o príncipe da Noruega estava lá. Tocamos duas músicas e eu nunca fiquei tão nervoso antes de um show.

UthMag: Qual música do Evanescence é a sua favorita?

W: Bem, fico em dúvida entre duas canções do novo álbum: "The Other Side" e "Never Go Back". "Never Go Back" é sobre o tsunami que aconteceu há um ano e meio no Japão. Está cheia de sentimentos, emoções e possui uma melodia muito legal de tocar em shows.

UthMag: Você tem alguma favorita dos álbuns anteriores?

W: Provavelmente, dos álbuns anteriores, a minha favorita seria... "Going Under".

UthMag: O que você faria se você não fosse músico?

W: Se eu não fosse músico?.. O que eu deveria ter feito era ir para a escola e se tornar um advogado. Eles parecem estar fazendo muito dinheiro. (Risos)

UthMag: Quantas horas por semana você ensaia com a banda?
W: Quando estamos em turnê, tocamos todas as noites, por isso não precisa de muito ensaio nem nada. Nós normalmente fazemos passagem de som quando estamos planejando acrescentar uma nova canção no set. Para mim, gasto cerca de 30 - 40 minutos para aquecer antes do show. Mas quando estamos escrevendo canções, passamos de 8 - 12 horas, com intervalos, porque é assim que conseguimos que as coisas sejam feitas.

UthMag: Além da música, o que mais vocês fazem para relaxar?

W: Os caras e eu gostamos de ir à academia e nos exercitar, para nos mantermos saudáveis. Eu não sou um grande fã de video game, mas eu jogo Pinball Arcade no iPad e iPhone. Nós também ouvimos muita música.

UthMag: Que tipo de música você ouve?

W: Um monte dos anos 80.

UthMag: Existem bandas ou artistas atuais que você ouve?

W: Eu escuto qualquer coisa. Eu gosto dos Deftones e Slipknot. O álbum novo álbum do Korn ficou muito legal. Também escuto Skrillex e Deadmau5. Ouço um monte de coisas diferentes.

UthMag: Existem músicos que você mais admira?

W: Eu realmente gosto de Tommy Lee. Houve um momento em que o vi na imprensa. Depois de alguns acontecimentos estranhos, acabei sendo o baterista da sua banda. Eu realmente tive que conhecê-lo como pessoa. Ele realmente é genuíno e um doce de pessoa. Realmente tem os pés no chão e também é extremamente talentoso. Foi legal conhecê-lo e ter a grande sorte de chamá-lo meu amigo.

UthMag: Você tem algum conselho para os jovens músicos que estão tentando torná-la grande lá fora?

W: Você deve realmente amar o que você está fazendo! Se está tentando ser um músico ou qualquer outra coisa, deve amar e acreditar em si mesmo. Comigo, foi o amor pela música e por tocar que me ajudaram a atravessar tudo isso. Se você está pensando sobre o quão rico você será e como grande será a sua carteira, então, provavelmente, este não é o caminho que deve seguir.

UthMag: Última pergunta. Se você tivesse um poder de super-herói, qual seria?

W: Se eu tivesse um super poder, qual seria? (Risos) Seria o de voar! Faria meu show e voltaria para casa. Chegaria em 20 minutos como Superman. Então, poderia voar de volta para mais um show e fazer a mesma coisa depois. Essa seria a melhor coisa a fazer.

UthMag: Is this the first time you are visiting the Middle East?

Will: We’ve played in countries close to Dubai but this is the first time the band is visiting Dubai, definitely. We are really excited about playing there because we have heard so much about it and seen so many pictures. It looks like an amazing place.

UthMag: Do you think you’ll have time to do some sight-seeing or will you carry on with the tour?

W:It’s going to be really tough because we fly in the day before the show and we leave the day after the show. We have a few hours here and there but not as much time we would want to actually explore Dubai.

UthMag: How has the tour experience been so far?

W: It has been great! We started the tour in September and it has been going steady since then. We’ve been really busy and the crowds have been amazing. The new record is being received really well too.

UthMag: What is the hardest part of being on tour?

W: The hardest part of being on tour is staying away from my wife and daughter. And of course, the 2 dogs.

UthMag: You left Evanescence for some time. What was it like getting back to the  band?

W: We finished the “The Open Door” tour in 2007. We all took some time off because Amy wanted to just have a normal life. During that time she had been writing. Then we all got together and started writing and that is when we really started to work on the new album. But I was really busy during that time. I was working with a band called Static X. I also worked with Zakk Wylde – the guitarist for Ozzy Osbourne – in a band called Black Label Society, which is a big deal in the US and Europe. Playing music may sometimes be thought of as a business but I really like playing my music and working with other people.

UthMag: What is the best part of being a musician?

W: The best part of being a musician is that feeling of unity and power you get by playing songs that you have written in front of 50,000 – 60,000 people. 

UthMag: 50,000 – 60,000?! Do you ever get nervous before a gig?

W: I don’t nervous anymore. I just go up on stage and do my thing. But there was one instance when we were playing for the Nobel Peace Prize Concert in Norway in December. It was televised internationally. There were many diplomats and even the prince of Norway was there. We played two songs and that was the most nervous we had ever been before a show.

UthMag: Which Evanescence song is your favorite?

W: Well, it is a toss up between two songs from the new album, “The Other Side” and “Never Go Back”. “Never Go Back” is about the tsunami that happened a year and a half ago in Japan. It is full of feelings and emotion and a really cool tune to play at gigs so I’ll go with that one.

UthMag: Do you have any favorites from the previous album?

W: Probably my favorite to play from the previous records would be…. “Going Under”.

UthMag: What would you do if you weren’t a musician?

W: If I weren’t a musician..? What I should’ve done was go to school and become a lawyer. They seem to be making all the money. (laughs)

UthMag: How many hours per week do you and the band practice?

W: When we are on tour, we play every night, so we don’t need to practice or anything. We normally do sound checks when we are planning to throw a new song in the set. For me, I spend about 30 – 40 minutes warming up before the show. But when we are writing songs, we spend from 8 – 12 hours, with breaks of course, because that is how we get things done.

UthMag: Besides the music, what else do you guys do to relax?

W: Me and the guys like to go to the gym and work out, to stay healthy. I’m not  a huge video game fan but I play Pinball Arcade on the iPad and iPhone. We also listen to a lot of music.

UthMag: What kind of music do you listen to?

W: A LOT of 80′s music.

UthMag: Are there any present bands or artists you listen to?

W: I listen to just about anything. I like the Deftones. And Slipknot. The new Korn album was really neat. It had dubstep in it. I listen to Skrillex and Deadmau5. I listen to a lot of different stuff.

UthMag: Are there any musicians you admire the most?

W: I really like Tommy Lee. But there was  moment when I saw him at the press and wasn’t so sure. After some strange twisted events, I ended up being the drummer for his band. I really got to know him as a person. He’s a really genuine, cool, sweet individual. Really down-to-Earth and also extremely talented. it was cool to meet him and I’m really lucky to call him my friend.

UthMag: Do you have any advice for the young musicians that are trying to make it big out there?

W: You should really love what you are doing! If you are trying to be a musician or whatever you want to be, you have to love what you are doing and believe in yourself and that it could happen to you. For me it was my love for music and playing that helped me through it all. If you are thinking about how rich you’ll be and how big your wallet is, then this is probably not the business you should get into.

UthMag: Last question. If you had a superhero power, what would it be?

W: If I had a super power, what would it be? (laughs) That would be to fly! I would get done with my gig and fly back home. I’ll reach there in 20 minutes like Superman. Then I could fly back to another gig and do the same thing. That would be the coolest thing to do.

Evanescence fará seu segundo show no Oriente Médio, sendo o primeiro em Israel em 2007. No dia 22 de junho, os cinco integrantes da banda se apresentarão no Dubai World Trade Center, em Dubai, capital dos Emirados Árabes Unidos. A abertura será feita pela banda local EYE (Empty Yard Experiment).
